About Aya Sakamoto

Aya is a dedicated conservationist with a passion for Southeast Asia.

Growing up between Europe and Asia, she developed a love for nature and learned the importance of the cultural and social contexts in tackling complex issues such as biodiversity decline. This led her to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Environmental Biology at Imperial College London, followed by a Master’s degree in Biodiversity Conservation and Management at the University of Oxford. During her studies, she conducted research with the Zoological Society of London and the National University of Singapore on species and habitat conservation.

For 5 years as a sustainability consultant, Aya helped public and private organisations reduce their environmental impact, enhance the communities serve, and improve their governance. Now, she is using her expertise in leading complex, multicultural projects to manage Synchronicity Earth’s Asian Species Programme.
