Yayasan Konservasi Ekosistem Alam Nusantara (KIARA)

Yayasan Konservasi Ekosistem Alam Nusantara (KIARA) leads the conservation efforts for the Javan Gibbon and its habitat through scientific research, mainstreaming information, education and capacity building.

At A Glance

Working primarily in Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (GHSNP)—one of the last strongholds for the species—KIARA manages the only long-term field station in the world focused exclusively on wild Javan gibbons.

Located in the Citalahab Forest, the research site was established through a collaboration between Ewha Womans University (South Korea) and IPB University (Indonesia) and now serves as a vital training ground for Indonesian and international students alike.

KIARA is committed to translating scientific knowledge into accessible and engaging content, particularly for young audiences. Their conservation education programme is grounded in empathy, consistency, and the belief that lasting change comes from local communities. They aim to inspire the next generation to care about and protect Java’s last surviving ape.

Beyond research and education, KIARA also invests in local capacity building and women’s empowerment through programmes like Ambu Halimun, which uplifts women’s voices and supports grassroots conservation leadership.
