Baringo Indigenous Peoples Organisation

Baringo Indigenous Peoples Organisation was founded in 2021 in Baringo County, Kenya to address the exclusion of Indigenous women and youth from leadership, land rights, and climate action

As part of our Chrysalis Youth Fund, Baringo Indigenous Peoples Organisation  (BIPO) is a youth and young women-led organisation working to amplify the voices and lived experiences of Endorois, Pokot, and Ilchamus Indigenous Peoples to foster sustainable and community-driven change. Registered under Kenya's Ministry of Labour and Social Protection since 2024, BIPO's mission is to empower young people by promoting equity, sustainability, and leadership, envisioning a just, inclusive, and resilient society where their community is able to thrive. 

Mukutani, where BIPO operates, is under severe pressure and threat due to degraded freshwater ecosystems, biodiversity loss, and cultural erosion. Some of BIPO's restoration targets are increasing food security through Indigenous seed saving methods as well as preserving Indigenous beekeeping as a conservation-livelihood initiative, aiding the restoration of biodiversity in the area. Furthermore, the team is working to protect sacred local sites and languages as well as encouraging youth-led dialogue to promote peacebuilding and community healing.

These programmes and the approach that BIPO takes are rooted in supporting women and youth to be custodians of the land and water. This looks towards their goals of restoring a key community spring, establishing 20 modern hives managed by the Indigenous youth, and engaging women and young people in a native seedling nursery. 

BIPO collaborates with national, regional, and global partners to strengthen Indigenous Peoples' voices, advance climate justice, and support community driven initiatives. In partnership with Synchronicity Earth, the team ensures that the restoration of local habitats and freshwater systems, documentation of local environmental stewardship knowledge, and conservation decision-making are not only catered towards youth and women but created by them.  

Recently, the team implemented a five-year strategy that outlines key focuses for enhancing accountability and sustainability within their organisation, looking towards the future of youth-led conservation in Mukutani.
