Proyecto VASI

Proyecto VASI works to improve scientific understandings of the Amazon, expand conservation projects, and introduce alternatives to unsustainable livelihoods that local, national, and international decision makers can utilise in their community.

At A Glance

Proyecto VASI focuses on the Loreto region, along the Ucayali River in Peru, within one of the largest river systems in the world, the Amazon River basin. The team works through a Peruvian Amazon lens, focusing on illegal logging, mining, and coca cultivation as the primary environmental threats.

With a team of local communities, fishers, students and scientists, Proyecto VASI strives to introduce sustainable alternatives that refine practices of commercial fisheries, agriculture, and forestry across the nine communities it works with along the Ucayali River.

The nine founding communities of Proyecto VASI have a history of marginalisation and were frustrated by local government’s lack of ability to address local urgencies and make influential change. It became a gateway for local communities and residents to forge a path toward a more sustainable future. With access to the network of collaborators, communities can receive technical knowledge, capital, experiences, and anything that is necessary for their visions to flourish.

Proyecto VASI aims to create a world that acknowledges these marginalised voices in mainstream conversation. A world that is more sustainably socially, environmentally, culturally, economically. and spiritually. It highlights the interconnectedness of health, environment, production, and economy.

Synchronicity Earth is supporting Proyecto VASI and its communities, together with the regional fisheries department, to implement community-based fisheries agreements, driving sustainable fisheries management practices that benefit freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as local livelihoods and socio-economic well-being.
