IUCN Freshwater Plants Specialist Group (FPSG)

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Freshwater Plants Specialist Group (FPSG) is part of the Species Survival Commission, which pools the knowledge of more than 10,000 volunteer experts from around the world. The FPSG is a collaboration of more than 150 individuals from over 60 countries with a common interest in the conservation of wetland-dependent plant species.

The FPSG’s aim is to assess the extinction risk of all wetland-dependent plant species, produce Species Conservation Strategies for those which are threatened and use these strategies to obtain funding for field conservation.

Synchronicity Earth’s Freshwater Programme has supported the FPSG to undertake a desk-based research task to form a list of all the wetland-dependent plants in the Lower Mekong River Basin. The objective of this project is to then allow assessments of their extinction risk to take place, and for this process to inform future conservation action in the region.
