Action for Conservation is a UK charity using pioneering approaches to inspire and empower young people, aged 12-18, from diverse backgrounds to become the next generation of nature conservationists.
56% of UK species are in decline, over 50% of people are unaware of biodiversity loss and 79% of children lack adequate connections to nature. We know that young people without strong connections to nature are less likely to fight to protect it as adults and suffer negative impacts on their learning, behaviour and wellbeing. Yet interventions often focus on young children, rather than young people as they solidify opinions and behaviours that will shape their careers and adult lives. Action for Conservation fills this gap, partnering with conservation organisations like the National Trust and Synchronicity Earth to empower young people to create change in their communities and participate in environmental decision making. They believe that being a ‘conservationist’ can’t just mean following a career as a field biologist or a campaigner, but that a passion for conservation can flow through anyone’s life, whatever their day-job. They want to inspire today’s young people to a long-term belief in the wonder of the natural world, which will shape their dreams and actions however their life turns out.
