Last Wednesday Synchronicity Earth and Project Ocean joined forces to host a lunch at Selfridges for members of the Environmental Funders Network (EFN), featuring a conversation between Sylvia Earle and Heather Koldewey.
Sylvia Earle is regarded as a legend in the marine world with Time Magazine naming her their first ‘Hero for the Planet’. Sylvia was chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and has since set up Mission Blue (a global initiative formed in response to Sylvia Earle’s 2009 TED Prize wish). With more than 100 expeditions and 7000 hours underwater Sylvia lives up to her informal title ‘Her Deepness’.
Heather Koldewey is the Head of Global Programmes at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and co-founder of Project Seahorse(a marine conservation group dedicated to securing a world where marine ecosystems are healthy and well-managed). Heather is also part of the team that developed Project Ocean with Selfridges, which was set up to provide a
connector-beam between conservation organisations and artists, musicians, celebrities, chefs, fishers, and industry representatives to find creative ways of protecting and engendering support for marine life.
Sylvia and Heather’s conversation challenged the typical view of marine life as ‘something to be extracted’ and described the importance, beauty and intelligence of sea creatures.
