Anguillid Specialist Sub-Group and ZSL

Location: Global.

The Zoological Society London (ZSL) and the IUCN Anguillid Specialist Sub-Group are working to understand the conservation status of Eel species across the world.

Populations of a number of species within the family Anguillidae – hereafter referred to as eels – have been declining for over 30 years.

The European Eel (Anguilla anguilla) is particularly badly affected. Currently listed as Critically Endangered on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, it has  received legislative attention from the European Union (EU). Member States are now required to follow management plans. The species is also listed on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which means that its trade is closely controlled.
